Encounter of a Streamwise Vortex with a Plate

Encounter of a streamwise vortex with a plate.  Time-averaged (white) streamlines and contours of constant positive (red) and negative (yellow) streamwise vorticity are shown in the crossflow planes A-A (upstream of leading-edge of the plate), B-B (at midchord of the plate), C-C (at trailing-edge of the plate), and D-D (downstream of the plate). These averaged images were determined from a series of instantaneous images. Upon encounter with the plate, the vortex is split, as shown in plane B-B. The split vortices move in opposite directions and away from the top and bottom surfaces of the plate and attain the extreme positions indicated in plane C-C. Immediately downstram of thetrailing-edge of the plate, the coherence of the vortices is dramaticlaly reduced, as shown in image D-D. The incident stream wise vortex is generated from a delta wing having a Reynolds number based on chord of Re = 9.4 x 10³. [32] Related concepts are addressed in [33 through 36].
