Welcome to the website of the Fluid Mechanics Laboratories, located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Lehigh University.
The common goal of all our research programs is to gain a deeper understanding of complex, fascinating flows using techniques of quantitative imaging, while attempting to reveal new physical phenomena that will have a major impact. Applications include flow-induced vibration, noise generation, aerodynamics, drag reduction, heat transfer, and manufacturing processes.
In recent years, we have put forth concentrated efforts to construct new types of experimental facilities, with emphasis on three-dimensional optical access, heat transfer, manufacturing processes, and mixing in environmental flows. These facilities are complemented by a variety of analog and digital systems for acquisition of quantitative images.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, DARPA, the National Science Foundation, the Volkswagen Foundation, NASA-Langley, Pratt and Whitney, and Lockheed-Martin for their generous financial support.
We work closely with colleagues from other universities, government laboratories and industrial concerns.
A major intent of this website is to stimulate further communication and collaboration with experimental and numerical groups at other institutions. In this spirit, we provide representative images from our recent and ongoing investigations. Some of these works are not yet published, but all have been submitted for publication in archival format and a direct citation is provided. We hope that you will find our albums of quantitative imaging to be interesting and informative.
